Why cheese in a Can?

In the 1930s, the Creamery became interested in different ways to store cheese. Cans seemed the best option as plastic packaging materials had not been invented and wax packaging sometimes cracked, leading to contamination. One of the cheeses resulting from the research was Cougar Gold®. The tradition lives on.

The Mission of the WSU Creamery:

We provide teaching and research opportunities to the university community and to the dairy industry, exceptional work experience to student employees, and financial support to students and university operations. This will be accomplished by constantly providing safe dairy products of exceptional quality, with outstanding customer service.

Vision:

The teaching and research programs will be shaped to meet the needs of the dairy industry in the state, region, and country. The cheese and ice cream products and the customer service will continue to be known for their excellence across a growing constituency.

In order to achieve the vision, WSU Creamery commits to the following:
The excellent reputation of Cougar Cheeses and Ferdinand’s Ice Cream will enable continued funding of operations and activities. The first responsibility is to the students and customers who seek the services and products of the Creamery. In day-to-day operations we strive to:

• Treat students, staff, and clientele with respect. Offer exceptional customer service in all areas of the operation.
• Follow the philosophy that the success of our students, clientele, and staff is the only measure of the organization’s success.
• Be considered an educational and business leader in the university community and the dairy industry.
• Through a long-term commitment to this mission, the WSU Creamery will be known as an organization that excels. Students, customers, vendors, and employees see the WSU Creamery as offering unique products and excellent service.

Purchasing cheese from the WSU Creamery helps support student employees of Washington State University by providing competitive wages and valuable work experiences. A portion of the revenue from the sale of WSU Creamery products is used for educational support of Food Science students.
